OBITUARY

Mrs. Irma Theresa Brown Greene

Mrs. Irma Theresa Brown Greene entered eternal life on March 12, 2024. She was born on

December 4, 1928, the daughter of William Melvin Brown Sr. and Eva Taylor Brown. Mrs. Greene

was a graduate of Burke High School and South Carolina State University. She also held a Master's

Degree in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She was a librarian in various

schools in the Charleston area dating back to the 1950s, including Laing High School, Avery Institute,

Burke High School, and C.A.Brown High School. She also served briefly as the Executive Director

of the Charleston County Education Association, the local affiliate of the SCEA and the NEA. In June

1955 she married Calvin Reginald Greene Sr. From this union there was one son,Calvin R. Greene Jr.

of Charleston. Mrs. Greene was active in many civic and community organizations including the

Links Incorporated, Continental Societies, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, St. Patrick's Women's Guild,

and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Gibbes Museum of Art. Mrs. Greene is survived

by her son Calvin Greene Jr, grandson Calvin Greene III, sisters Beverly Williams and Ruth Fridie-

Waye of Charleston as well as nephew Frank Mannings III of Charleston, Herman Jeter of New York

City, and nieces Yvonne Ebea ( Patrick ) and Joyce Jeter also of New York.“In addition there is a niece Tamara Brown Boone and Dr. William Melvin Brown III both of Charleston and a nephew Dr. David Fridie of Texas.” A memorial service for Mrs. Greene

will be annouced at a later date.
