Obituary of Susan Longfellow Bowling

Susan Longfellow Bowling, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away at home surrounded by her husband and daughters on July 11th, 2021, in Summerville, SC.  She was born in Providence, Rhode Island October 2nd, 1943, to Pauline Whittier Longfellow and Arthur Clayton Longfellow.  They later moved to Massachusetts where she grew up and graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology.

Sue met her husband of 38 years, Rev. Dr. David C. Bowling, through the local church she and her daughters attended in Vernon, CT.  Later in life, they moved to North Carolina, Maine and finally in 2018 settled in Summerville, SC.

Sue, like her father, had a love for singing in the church choir, volunteering her time with many organizations and traveling to spend time with her family.  Sue found joy in cheering on her daughters and eventually her grandchildren in all their sporting events.  She loved to travel and share her laughter with her sister, Joanne and her longtime college friend, Miriam. There was never a funny greeting card that wouldn’t make her laugh to the point of crying. And she was always the one you knew you could get a great laugh from with a good prank.

Not only did Sue work long, hard hours as a special chemistry lab supervisor at the University of Connecticut Health Center, she worked hard raising her daughters and being involved with their many activities including countless weekends spent at swim meets. In between commuting, working, and driving her girls all over New England, she managed to cook all the time and keep the house immaculate. Yes, there was a living room no one could sit in, and everyone had to clean before the cleaning lady arrived, but she was determined to run a tight ship – and it left an impression that only created good habits for her girls.

After retiring from the UCONN Health Center, she was able to work part time and give back to the YMCA swim program that she had spent so many years involved in through both her daughter’s participation.

Sue is survived by her husband, David Bowling, her daughters and their spouses:  Stacey & Steve Cameron, Amy Ferranti & Matt Soble and her beloved grandchildren, Tyler, Ashley, Rylan and Camden.  Along with nieces, Donna & Lauren and nephew David.  She is proceeded in death by her parents, Pauline & Clayton Longfellow, sister & her husband, Joanne & Dave Pratt.

The family will be having a Celebration of Life ceremony at the South Freeport Congregational Church in South Freeport Maine on Saturday August 21st, 2021, at 2:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks anyone who wishes, to plant a tree, donate to the church memorial garden, where her remains will be placed, and/or donate to the American Cancer Society
