Marilyn Stephens

Obituary of Marilyn Delavern Stephens

It is with deep sadness that the family share the passing of MARILYN DELAVERN STEPHENS, of Okemos, Michigan. She was 89 years old.

Born on May 6, 1932 in Waterford, Pennsylvania to Ken and Thora Delavern, Marilyn was the eldest of three sisters (Margie Root and Jean Hentemann). Known for her warmth and positive approach to friends and family, Marilyn lightened the mood wherever she went. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, she embraced each role with a lifetime of incredible love and devotion. During her almost 68 years of marriage to George S. Stephens, they raised three children (George Jr, Margie, and Mark) living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ridgewood, New Jersey, Birmingham, Michigan, and finally Okemos, Michigan.

Marilyn loved her home and used it to create beautiful memories with her family and to graciously entertain friends. She was adored for her joie de vivre, natural curiosity, and relentless care for the people in her life. Affectionately called Grammy by her grandchildren, she epitomized so many of the traits that adorn that role. Loved throughout her life by many, she embodied the spirit and tenacity of a true Michigander. That spirit amplified on game day of her beloved Michigan State Spartans! When alone, she was immersed in her New York Times reading about opera, politics, and the arts. Among the organizations that benefited from her passion and commitment are St Joseph’s Hospital (top volunteer award), Michigan State University School of Music, MSU Choral Union, and Whitehills Book Club. She saved everything as making and cherishing memories is what meant most. Whether those were demonstrated through her famous apricot cookies, music, or time spent together at the exquisite dining room table; there could be no better legacy than to love so many people with such a huge heart.

Marilyn will be lovingly remembered by her survivors including son, George, Jr. and wife, Kim; son, Mark and wife, Mary Lee; and daughter, Margie Walsh and grandchildren, George Stephens III (Trey) and Katie (Stephens) Cope; Kelly Walsh; Meggie, Connor and Haley Stephens, and two step-granddaughters, Abigail and Brooke Lady.

Marilyn will be honored in a private ceremony, with the burial at Foote Cemetery, Williamston, MI to follow.
