Harold Ross

Obituary of Harold Eugene Ross

Harold Eugene Ross, age 80, of N. Charleston, SC, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024. Harold was born July 9, 1943 in Pensacola, FL to the late John Ross and Thelma Mae Graham Ross.

After serving in the US Navy, Harold went on to a long-lasting career at the Charleston Naval Shipyard working as a painter and as a pipefitter and then on to the Accounting Tech Team for DFAS. Known as the “Dorchester Road Coke Man,” he serviced the Dorchester Road route for Coca Cola as was well known and liked by his customers many of which became friends. Harold was never shy, never met a stranger, and was always happy to discuss Gamecock sports, fishing, baseball, or family with those he encountered.

An avid Carolina Gamecock fan, Harold was probably best known for the years he spent coaching, then transitioning to umpiring, youth baseball. More often than not, he could be found on the field teaching, training, officiating, or just watching and enjoying the game. As umpire, countless athletes (and many parents) both loved and hated him at times but respected his passion for the game. He passed his passion on to his sons, many other umpires that he helped train, and the youth that he coached and officiated.

Harold’s true passion, though, was his children and grandchildren. He loved spending time with them and watching their participation in sports, hobbies, fishing, and school events. He loved to brag about his children and grandchildren to those around him and no accomplishment was too small to mention. He cherished spending time with his family. Whether it was for a meal, attending church, holidays, game nights, or just hanging out, it was with them that he was happiest.

Harold is survived by his sons: Gene Ross (Lysa) and Michael Ross (Angie); grandchildren: Madelynn, Emma, and Jackson Ross, Tristen Packard, and Steven Ross; Brothers: John Carlyle Ross (Donna), William “Billy” Ross (Gina), Terry Ross and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Richard “Ric” Ross.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on February 3, 2024, beginning at 10:00AM at Crossroads Community Church, 505 Gahagan Road, Summerville SC 29485 with the funeral Service beginning at 11:00AM.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Harold's name may be made to Crossroads Community Church.
